History
Mary H. Matula, co-founder of the Charles County Science Fair, began her 36-year career as a science teacher in 1949 at La Plata High School. Born on May 21, 1927, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Matula was the daughter of Charles and Teresa Howell. She attended St. Nicholas elementary and high schools in Wilkes-Barre and received a Bachelor of Science degree from College Misericordia in Dallas, Pa. During her teaching career, Matula founded the La Plata High School Chapter of the National Honor Society, served as department chairperson and sponsored yearbook, cheerleading and student council.
Matula also served as president of the Education Association of Charles County, a member of the Charles County branch of the American Cancer Society, a member of the Charles County Community Concerts Association and a member of the parish council of Sacred Heart Church.
Matula met her husband Robert while teaching at La Plata. He was a physical education teacher and coach at the high school. The two married on Aug. 26, 1950.
